Book Review

“Moms” by Shivani Sibal is the kind of book that makes a beautiful life look very different once the doors are closed. Radhika Khanna has everything that seems to define success—an expensive home, a wealthy husband, a daughter, friends, parties, and a respected place in Delhi’s social circles. Yet she is constantly careful about what she says, how she looks, and how she behaves. Her husband’s control has become such a normal part of her life that she has almost forgotten what it means to choose for herself. The contrast between Radhika’s public image and private life is one of the strongest parts of the novel.

The world Shivani creates is familiar, but there is something uncomfortable beneath its glamour. School groups, social gatherings, yoga classes, dinners, gossip, and Instagram posts all become part of a larger game of keeping up appearances. The women are expected to be perfect mothers, wives, friends, and social figures, even when their own lives are falling apart. What makes the story work is that Shivani does not simply blame these women or make them look foolish. She shows their insecurities, jealousies, loneliness, and small acts of kindness, making them feel like people who could easily exist outside the pages of the book.

Radhika’s story becomes more powerful as she slowly reaches a point where she can no longer continue living quietly. Her rebellion is not sudden in the emotional sense; it feels like the result of years of swallowing anger, fear, and disappointment. “Moms” is ultimately about the cost of being the “good” woman for too long. It questions what happens when keeping everyone happy means losing yourself. Dark, honest, and often painful, the novel looks past the designer clothes and perfect photographs to show the loneliness that privilege cannot always hide.
