Book Review
Sutapa Basu’s “Conspiracy in Ladakh” sends young detectives Tara and Vicky to Pangong Tso, where birds and animals are dying after drinking the lake’s water. What begins as a family holiday quickly becomes an investigation involving science, wildlife, the Changpa community, and a possible larger plot. Sutapa writes with clear purpose: she wants readers to enjoy a mystery while also understanding how ecology, livelihood, geography, and politics are connected.
Her style is direct and informative, with vivid descriptions of Ladakh’s harsh beauty and a steady build-up of clues. The pacing is mostly brisk; each discovery pushes Tara and Vicky closer to the truth, and the mix of legend, environmental crisis, and suspicion keeps the plot interesting.
The language is simple enough for readers aged ten and above, though it occasionally slips into explanation mode, especially when scientific or political background needs to be delivered. This makes the book educational and accessible, but it can slow the emotional pull of the story; the young characters sometimes feel like guides leading readers through a lesson.

Still, Sutapa’s respect for Ladakh and the Changpa way of life gives the novel warmth. “Conspiracy in Ladakh” works best as a thoughtful adventure rather than a pure thriller: it may not be packed with edge-of-the-seat suspense, but it leaves readers asking sharper questions about water, wildlife, and who really pays when nature is harmed.
