Megan Garber’s “Screen People” looks at how digital screens have changed not only our daily habits but also the way we see the world. The book begins with the strange events of February 26, 2015—the viral debate over the colour of “the dress” and the famous runaway llamas. Garber says this day marked the beginning of a time when people became “angrier, louder, lonelier, wearier.” Her main idea is that entertainment now shapes everyday life. We are always performing, sharing, watching, and being watched, as if we are on a stage all the time.
The book is divided into sections titled “The Producers,” “The Stars,” “The Sets,” “The Scripts,” “The Props,” and “The Haters.” Garber explains how these parts of a show reflect the way we behave online and offline. She shows how people can be treated like “props” for entertainment, how real events are turned into stories, and how social media platforms and algorithms can make ordinary users feel like celebrities or background characters. Using examples from politics, reality TV, social media, and AI, she explains how it is becoming harder to distinguish truth from performance.
