Book Review
Some people build careers, some build businesses, and then there are people whose lives feel big enough for a movie. “The Perception Game” by Shailendra Singh and Mahendra Jakhar follows Sikandar, whose unusual journey begins when he is just six years old and fleeing violence in Belgaum with his family. He eventually finds himself in 1970s Bombay, where he enters the worlds of advertising, Bollywood, business, politics and entertainment. What makes his story so interesting is the huge change in his life. From a frightened child escaping violence to a man building a major entertainment business, his journey is filled with risks, chances, friendships and failures.
But the book is not only about Sikandar’s success. The people around him give the story its heart. His love for his family, Nona’s strong support and his friendship with Fakira bring out a softer side of his personality. Fakira’s later involvement in the underworld makes their friendship even more complicated. The Dubai episode adds another layer to the story, putting Sikandar’s family and loyalty to the test. His way of looking at problems is also one of his biggest strengths. The Jai Hind Motors campaign is a good example. Instead of focusing only on money and practical details, he understands the emotions of the people he wants to reach. That ability to see things differently is what gives the book’s title its meaning.

Even though the book is more than 400 pages, it remains easy to follow because of its short chapters and many events. There is family drama, friendship, crime, business, Bollywood, politics and plenty of surprises, giving the story an almost movie-like feel. At times, Sikandar’s life seems almost too extraordinary to be real, but that is also what makes the journey so entertaining.
“The Perception Game” is ultimately a story about ambition, relationships, setbacks and the courage to look at life differently.
