Book Review

“Triumph of the Indian Republic: My Life, My Struggles” is the deeply personal autobiography of Ram Nath Kovind, the 14th President of India. Released by the Prime Minister, this candid narrative traces Kovind’s inspiring rise from a humble Dalit family in Paraunkh village, Uttar Pradesh, to the nation’s highest constitutional office. Overcoming severe socio-economic hardships, a lack of access to quality education, and intense political competition, his journey saw him serve as a lawyer, Rajya Sabha Member of Parliament, and Governor of Bihar before stepping into Rashtrapati Bhavan. At its core, the book serves as a powerful testament to personal resilience and a living example of how the Indian Constitution offers equal opportunities to all citizens regardless of their background.

Beyond his early struggles, the narrative offers a rare, behind-the-scenes window into Kovind’s presidential tenure from 2017 to 2022. He reflects candidly on navigating major national events, including the COVID-19 pandemic and complex political hurdles like President’s rule in Maharashtra. Kovind also details the delicate balance required as a Dalit leader balancing community expectations with constitutional duties, all while maintaining the dignity and impartiality of the presidency in a politically charged environment. What adds remarkable depth to the story is his focus on inner growth; he shares insights from his participation in serious Vipassana retreats, demonstrating how self-introspection, humility, and mindfulness helped forge his character and bring enduring peace during demanding times.

To sum up, “Triumph of the Indian Republic” is much more than a political memoir—it mirrors Bharat’s collective struggle and journey toward fulfilling the preamble values of equality, liberty, and fraternity. By telling the story of a leader from a disadvantaged background who helped shape the country’s future, the book shows how previously marginalised communities play a key role in making democracy stronger.

It is an inspiring read and a helpful guide for students, researchers, leaders, and anyone looking to build inner strength while working for the nation’s progress.
