Step-by-Step Janmashtami Fasting & Vrat Rules

To earn the full spiritual blessings of Lord Krishna, devotees observe the Nirjala (waterless) or Phalahar (fruit-based) fast.

  • Morning Sankalpa: Wake up during Brahma Muhurat, bathe, and take a solemn pledge (Sankalpa) in front of your home deity to observe a devoted day-long fast.
  • What to Consume: If keeping a Phalahar fast, consume milk, fruits, rock salt (sendha namak), and water. Avoid grains, pulses, onions, garlic, and regular salt.
  • Parana (Breaking the Fast): Fasting is traditionally broken after the midnight Aarti by accepting Charnamrit and Makhan Mishri, followed by a full satvik meal the next morning after sunrise (after 06:01 AM, Sept 5).

  • Shringar & Vastra: Dress Laddu Gopal Ji in new yellow (Pitambari) or peacock-blue silk clothes, adorn Him with a Mukut (crown), Peacock Feather (Mor Pankh), and a small Bansuri (flute).
  • Jhula Seva: Place Bal Gopal in a decorated swing (jhula) and gently swing Him while singing bhajans.
