Book Review
Shastri Akella’s “A Queer Shade of Saffron” is a bold short-story collection that places queer desire firmly inside Indian landscapes, histories, and social pressures. Its characters include boys in pre-Partition Punjab, men divided by the Kashmir border, a temple singer in Gujarat, and women resisting caste and patriarchy in Andhra. Across these settings, Akella shows queerness not as a single identity but as a way of questioning rigid rules about gender, love, caste, and power.
The writing is sensuous, cinematic, and carefully controlled. Akella uses a delicate economy of language: his sentences are often spare, but they carry strong images of bodies, landscapes, rituals, and touch. This restraint gives the stories emotional force, especially when violence, shame, or longing sits beneath an otherwise quiet scene.

The collection’s strongest theme is the link between intimacy and resistance. Love here is personal, but it is never separate from politics; to desire freely is also to challenge family expectations, religious authority, caste hierarchy, and nationalism. Akella also reclaims saffron, a colour often tied to right-wing Hindu politics, by connecting it to the queer possibilities within Hindu mythology and Indian culture.
If there is a limitation, it is intensity. The stories can feel dense and symbolically loaded, and some readers may want more breathing space between the beautiful images and the heavy themes. Still, Akella writes with empathy and courage, making this a striking collection about people who refuse to shrink themselves.
